Anez is a lawyer and politician who assumed the position of president of the Plurinational State of Bolivia on an interim basis after the political crisis in Bolivia back in 2019, From November 12, 2019 to November 8, 2020. She is the second woman in the history of Bolivia to reach the presidential position after Lidia Gueiler Tejada (1979-1980).
Before being sworn in as head of state, Áñez held the position of second vice president of the Bolivian Chamber of Senators. Her ascension was formally endorsed by the Plurinational Constitutional Court two days after Evo Morales resigned.
Her mandate ended on November 7, 2020, when she transferred command to Luis Arce Catacora. Her persecution immediately began, being accused of having committed a coup d’état.
On June 10, 2022, she was sentenced to ten years in prison for the crimes of “breach of duties” and “resolutions contrary to the Constitution” by the First Anti-Corruption Sentencing Court of La Paz.
