Dora Maria Tellez, one of the key rebels of the Sandinista Revolution of the late 1970s in Nicaragua, is among the opposition figures detained by the government of President Daniel Ortega.
The government accuses her of “inciting foreign interference in internal affairs” and “requesting military interventions,” among other alleged crimes.
Tellez is a historical figure in the revolutionary fight; she was a medical student recruited by the FSLN with whom she fought in the so-called Northern Front, developing insurrections in urban areas of Nicaragua.
Known as “the Commander 2”, she was one of the leaders of the assault on the National Palace in 1978, where the Nicaraguan National Assembly was in session. The rebels took civilians and politicians hostage demanding the release of political prisoners, ransom money and the publication of their manifestos through different media.
