In 2015, Maykel was imprisoned for his controversial theme Por ti señor, in which he accuses Fidel Castro of being responsible for the ills and the precarious situation in which the Cuban people are immersed. He participated in the composition of the song Patria y Vida that won an Emmy in 2022.
In August 2020, it was news for sewing his mouth as a sign of protest against the harassment and constant repression to which he was subjected.
Currently he has been imprisoned since last May in a maximum security prison in Cuba, accused of “attack, public disorder and evasion” after participating in several protests against the government.
