Navarrete was kidnapped for the first time in 2018 and sentenced to 24 years in prison, allegedly for murdering a paramilitary, however he was released from prison under the Ortega amnesty law on June 10, 2019

His freedom was one of the shortest for a former political prisoner, on July 24 of the same year in which he was released, barely a month after being released, he was recaptured, to later be charged and convicted of common crimes.

He was locked up for four months in a maximum security cell in the largest prison in Nicaragua, known as “La Modelo”.

Navarrete’s family has denounced on several occasions alleged torture in prison, which has resulted in the disfigurement of the prisoner’s face, who now must breathe through his mouth, since he cannot do so normally through his nose, according to the complaints and the photographs.

The established prison time expired on January 24, 2023, however they continue to deny him his freedom, despite of the fact that he has already served the sentence of three years and six months, for the alleged crimes of possession of psychotropic narcotics, other controlled substances and possession of a illegal gun.

Observations

He has served as one of the vice-presidents of the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) in the 2014-2019 parliamentary term. He renewed his seat in the European Parliament in the European elections of May 2019.
