He was arbitrarily detained on May 21, 2018 at the training school for officers of the Bolivarian National Guard in Fuerte Tiuna, Caracas. He was handcuffed and taken away in a DGCIM vehicle by four hooded men, uniformed and armed, placing a black coat over his head, beaten during the transfer and accused of treason.
Suárez is accused of having participated in the uprising of a group of more than 20 members of the Bolivarian National Guard.
The military stole weapons to revolt against Maduro days after his swearing-in as re-elected president of Venezuela, which was rejected by the National Assembly as it considered that it was the result of an election with no guarantees for the opposition.
He was tortured from the first day of his arrest. They shook him with handcuffs with his arms back, beating his body and testicles with boards; suffocating him with plastic bags. The place had a lot of white light and loud music. His face was always covered so that he would not know his aggressors. He was allowed to call his family on the fifth day of his detention. He was presented in court eight days after his arrest and charged with treason, instigation of military rebellion, conspiracy to mutiny and against military decorum.
He is currently being held in DGCIM de Boleíta, awaiting trial. On the 19th of march, 2019, Abraham Suárez attempted suicide, he was rescued by a cellmate and transferred to the Dr. Carlos Arvelo Military Hospital, in San Martín.
