Chamorro was the seventh opposition candidate who aspired to the presidency of Nicaragua in the 2021 elections to be found guilty and sentenced for the crimes of money laundering or treason.
Daughter of the assassinated Nicaraguan hero and anti-Somocista journalist Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Cardenal and former president Violeta Barrios de Chamorro (1990-1997), Cristiana Chamorro was the opposition figure most likely to win the 2021 November 7 presidential election.
Chamorro is the only candidate who has not been sent to a cell in the sinister Nuevo Chipote, but her guards have insisted on turning her house into a kind of exemplary prison, where she cannot even watch television.
