Javier Tarazona is a Venezuelan university professor and activist, specialized in education, director of the human rights organization Fundaredes since February 2005. He was president of the Táchira sectional College of Teachers of Venezuela between 2010 and 2018. He was arbitrarily detained since July 2021 after making an accusation before the Public Ministry against a former senior government official.

Tarazona presented himself to the Venezuelan Attorney General’s Office on June 30 with a photograph to request that the relationship between government officials and guerrilla leaders belonging to the National Liberation Army be investigated.

On July 2, 2021, agents of the Bolivarian Intelligence Service (SEBIN) arrested Tarazona in the city of Coro, Falcón state, along with his brother, since he had gone to the Public Ministry to report that he was being harassed and persecuted. in Falcón by state police officials, SEBIN and unidentified individuals.

On July 5, 2021, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, referred to the arrest of the three members of Fundaredes, including Tarazona, calling it “worrying” and requesting access to defense attorneys for his election. Later Amnesty International demanded the release of Tarazona.

His health has seriously deteriorated due to the lack of medical treatment of his different
conditions.
