She is president of the Democratic Union of Nicaragua (Unamos), an opposition group that succeeded the Sandinista Renovating Movement. She is also a member of the Blue and White National Unity opposition group that was formed after the outbreak of protests against the government in April 2018. In June 2021, she was arrested along with other opponents and pre-candidates for president in the Nicaraguan general elections of 2021.
She was sentenced on February 7, 2022 to 15 years in prison and disqualification from holding public office for the alleged crime of undermining national integrity.
Since the date of his arrest, June 13, 2021, he has remained in solitary confinement and incommunicado, without being able to communicate with his five-year-old son at the facilities of the “El Nuevo Chipote” Judicial Assistance Directorate, where the detainees are subjected to cruel and inhuman treatment.
Barahona has been one of the most representative faces within the opposition, denouncing the human rights violations committed in Nicaragua and advocating for the restoration of democracy in the country.
